LMKT to Develop a Weather API and Mobile App for Pakistan Meteorological Department

LMKT is collaborating with Code for Pakistan to develop a weather forecasting mobile application and web API for the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD). The application will use data provided by PMD to provide real-time weather forecasts using sensors located all across Pakistan.

The mobile application will provide users with daily, hourly and extended forecasts based on current or specified locations. Its additional features include real-time wind speed, wind direction, humidity, precipitation levels and notification-based alerts personalized to your desired location. The application will also include up to date pollen count information for the city of Islamabad. The Android application, set to launch in December, is free to download for the public.

The additional weather API being provided to PMD will enable customers to access a centralized database to purchase and download weather related data, reports and publications directly. Previously, the weather data was being provided using excel sheets to individual customers that could take up to 1-3 working days. The new web interface will allow end users to access relevant data for commercial, non-commercial, scientific or educational purposes in an efficient and timely way.

This project is in keeping with LMKT and Code for Pakistan’s shared mission of improving the quality of life across Pakistan through the creation of open source technology. The readily available real-time weather forecasts and pollen count information will allow the citizens of Pakistan to make informed day-to-day decisions pertaining to health and safety.
